Hi, my name is Erfan.
I am an Artificial Intelligence Researcher at the Gaslini AI Unit of IRCCS Istituto Giannina Gaslini, a paediatric research hospital in Genova, Italy. There I build transformer- and LLM-based systems on clinical data: a real-time Italian medical speech-to-text system, an agentic ICD-9 clinical-coding pipeline that is integrated into the hospital's clinical system, and analyses of longitudinal 3D motion-capture data from paediatric patients.
In March 2026 I completed my MSc in Computer Science (Data Science & Engineering) at the University of Genova. In my thesis, How Credible Are Movements in Synthetically Generated Humans?, I asked whether text-to-motion generative models produce biomechanically plausible walking, and showed that a simple classifier on gait features still tells real from generated motion with over 98% accuracy.
Before moving to Italy, I studied software engineering at Qazvin Islamic Azad University (2015–2021) and spent five years in its Mechatronics Research Laboratory, building robots for RoboCup. I joined the MRL HSL team in the Humanoid League in 2016, where I worked on robot vision and became head of software development in 2018, and the MRL SSL team in the Small Size League in 2019, where I worked on the simulator and visualizer and researched reinforcement learning; my BSc thesis taught a robot the go-to-ball skill with DDPG. With these teams I won RoboCup Asia-Pacific twice and finished second at the 2018 RoboCup world championship.
My research interests are large language models and foundation models for biomedical data, generative models and how to evaluate them, reinforcement learning, and computer vision.
